Abstract

The elderly population is increasing drastically and, with it, comes the demand for surgical procedures that improve quality of life and extend longevity. However, advanced age is often accompanied by a greater risk of postoperative complications, such as infections, cardiovascular problems and cognitive changes. The objective of this study was to identify and analyze the main surgical complications in elderly patients and discuss prevention and management strategies that can reduce mortality and improve postoperative results. This study used a literature review approach, focusing on studies published in 2022 to identify the main surgical complications in elderly patients and strategies to prevent and manage them. The results showed that older patients were more likely to suffer surgical complications due to comorbidities, natural aging and decreased physical capabilities. Complications such as infections, cardiovascular problems, delirium and kidney failure are common in this population. The literature review revealed that surgical complications in elderly patients are influenced by a variety of factors, such as age, pre-existing comorbidities and physical condition. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to ensure safer and more effective surgical management of elderly patients.
