This article aims to scan the current medical literature on red eye syndrome. This is an integrative review using the VHL, SciELO, LILACS and PubMed as databases over the last 5 years. 41 articles on the topic were evaluated with an emphasis on a synthesis of the most recent knowledge and greater scientific consistency. Red Eye Syndrome is a common complaint in outpatient practice. A small percentage of patients with red eyes require urgent ophthalmological referral and treatment, although the vast majority can be treated by their general practitioner. It is concluded that red eye is an extremely common complaint in clinical practice. There is little epidemiological data on red eye, but conjunctivitis is probably the most common cause of red eye in the community, but a number of more serious conditions can also occur.
