Advances and trends in the management of allergic rhinitis: an updated review

Abstract

This article aims to review the current literature on the efficacy of different therapeutic modalities in treating allergic rhinitis and their impact on patient's quality of life. The Pubmed, LILACS, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases were used to select articles, using the following descriptors: "allergic rhinitis", "rhinitis", "management" and "treatment". The results indicate that combined therapeutic approaches, including medications, immunotherapy, and surgical interventions, significantly improve patients' quality of life with allergic rhinitis. Treatment is based on three therapeutic modalities; non-pharmacological treatment is based on avoiding exposure to the allergen. Pharmacological treatment includes antihistamines for symptomatic flare-ups, intranasal corticosteroids to control inflammation, and immunotherapy to modulate the allergic response. Surgical approaches may be useful for refractory cases, improvements in nasal improvement, and other associated complications. The combination of these strategies often results in significant improvements in the quality of life of patients.
