Abstract

Tachycardia occurs due to the disorganization of electrical activity in the atria of the heart, which lose their ability to contract in atrial fibrillation. On the other hand, vascular dementia is related to decreased cognitive functions due to cerebral microinfarcts. This study aimed to investigate the link between atrial fibrillation and vascular dementia, with or without the presence of a stroke. We carried out an integrative review, searching the Virtual Health Library, National Library of Medicine and Scientific Electronic Library Online, using Health Sciences Descriptors such as Atrial Fibrillation, Vascular Dementia, Stroke, Prognosis and Quality of Life. We discovered that atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke, as blood stagnation in the atria can form clots that, when traveling to the brain, cause microinfarctions. This can result in progressive loss of cognition, worse prognosis and reduced quality of life.
