Abstract

The increased life expectancy of cancer patients resulting from the evolution of oncology therapies has brought a new challenge for this population: dealing with the sequelae of cancer, which affect the individual's physical and psychosocial health. To reduce these impacts, botulinum toxin and facial fillers have been sought out by cancer patients. These aesthetic interventions have contributions and risks for the cancer population that have not yet been fully elucidated. The aim of this article is to identify the benefits and risks of the aesthetic use of botulinum toxin and facial fillers in the cancer population. This is an integrative literature review. Articles published in English, Spanish and Portuguese between 2008 and 2024 were searched for in the PubMed, Google Scholar and Bireme databases. The descriptors used were: aesthetic treatment, cancer patient, fillers and botulinum toxin, combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR. A total of 33 articles were found, which, after analysis, resulted in a sample of 7 studies. The results show that aesthetic treatment with botulinum toxin and facial fillers improves the psychological well-being, self-image and body satisfaction of cancer patients. However, adverse effects such as granulomas, necrosis and infections can occur, especially given the fragile health of this group. It can be concluded that facial fillers and botulinum toxin have a number of contributions to the treatment of cancer, but adverse effects have been reported with its use, which makes it necessary for health specialists to monitor it. Finally, the lack of scientific evidence on this subject is noteworthy.
