The correlation between periapical inflammatory reactions and organic health is still a controversial subject in medical and dental circles. Several studies have raised the possibility that inflammatory reactions in the periapical region cause cardiovascular changes, respiratory diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, uveitis, intracranial abscess, bacteriospermia and subfertility, necrotizing fasciitis, mediastinitis and bacterial endocarditis due to dissemination by diffusion, anatomical planes, bacteria via the bloodstream, molecules originating from microorganisms and mediators of the immune or inflammatory response. However, since these studies are based on case reports, future research is necessary to establish the real dissemination mechanisms and to what extent the microorganisms present in the apical biofilm, the periapical immunoinflammatory response and antigen-antibody interactions are capable of lead to systemic reactions.
