THE PERI-IMPLANTITIS: ETIOLOGY AND TREATMENT: LITERATURE REVIEW

The aim of this study is to critically review the etiology and treatment of peri-implantitis. An extensive review of the literature was carried out to identify relevant studies regarding the purpose of this study. Electronic databases such as PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar were consulted to obtain the published articles. Articles were selected that directly address the issues of inflammation of the periimplant tissues, involving everything from the mucosa to the loss of bone tissue around the implant. Several factors are involved in the development of peri-implantitis, such as the presence of bacterial biofilm, occlusal overload, systemic diseases, alcoholism and smoking, characterizing peri-implantitis as a multifactorial disease. There are currently various therapeutic approaches to peri-implantitis, such as mechanical treatment, surgery, medication (antibiotic therapy) and laser therapy, with the clinical case determining the most appropriate treatment approach. The study reinforces the importance of combining techniques for more advanced cases of peri-implantitis, emphasizing that prevention is better than treating the disease, and provides safer and more consistent results. It is important to educate patients about the care required after rehabilitation with dental implants.
