Abstract
Introduction: There has been an increase in cases of orofacial trauma associated with sports, causing functional, aesthetic, emotional and financial impairment. It should be noted that to avoid these types of problems, the use of a mouthguard is indicated in order to protect the dental and periodontal structures by dissipating the impact forces to the surrounding orofacial structures. Thus, it is important that dental students and professionals are able to make mouthguards, which are adequate and effective preventive equipment. Objective: To present a protocol for making a type IV mouthguard (multilaminate) in the form of an e-book for dental students and professionals in order to disseminate the method of manufacturing this protective device. Methods: A bibliographical research was carried out in the PubMed, Online Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO) and Google Scholar databases. After screening the databases and removing duplicates, 63 studies were identified. After selecting the title and carefully reading the abstracts, articles that did not follow inclusion and exclusion criteria were excluded, and the work was carried out with 26 articles. This work resulted in the creation of an e-book that shows the step-by-step process of making a type IV mouth guard. Conclusion: This e-book proves to be an important tool in order to contribute to the reduction of occurrences of dental trauma in sports by disseminating the method of making this protective device.
