Abstract

The analysis of AIDS case notifications in Brazil between 2020 and 2023 revealed complex nuances in the distribution of cases by age group and region of the country. Utilizing data provided by the Ministry of Health, through the Department of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Viral Hepatitis, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (Dathi), we conducted a meticulous investigation into the incidence of the disease and its trends over this period. The results offer a comprehensive view of the epidemiology of AIDS in the Brazilian context. A striking disparity was observed among regions, with the Southeast leading in absolute terms of reported cases, followed by the Northeast, South, Midwest, and North. This regional discrepancy may be attributed to a range of factors, including population density, access to healthcare services, and socioeconomic differences among regions. When dissecting the distribution of cases by age group, the predominance of the 40-49 age group as the most affected in all regions was highlighted. This finding suggests a possible association between age and virus exposure, as well as the prevalence of risk behaviors in this age group. However, it is important to note that both younger and older age groups also presented significant numbers of reported cases, underscoring the need for comprehensive prevention and education strategies that cater to all age groups. These findings provide valuable insights for the formulation and implementation of public policies aimed at addressing the AIDS epidemic in Brazil. Understanding regional disparities and patterns of distribution by age group is essential for directing resources and interventions effectively, aiming to reduce the incidence of the disease and improve access to healthcare services for all affected populations.
