Abstract

Exostoses are bone growths that appear in different regions of the oral cavity. One of the variations found in the hard palate and mandible are the palatine and mandibular tori. The palatine torus develops in the midline of the hard palate and the mandibular torus is located on the lingual surface of the body of the mandible in the region of the canines and premolars, and may be unilateral or bilateral, single or multiple. Both can alter phonation and the creation of prostheses. Its prevalence ranges from 0.4% to 66.5% for palatal torus and 0.5% to 63.4% for mandibular torus. The objective of our study is to verify the prevalence of these structures in an Osteological Collection in the Northeast Region of Brazil. For our study, 474 dry adult skulls were used, 193 females and 281 males. In addition to the skulls, we used 479 dry adult mandibles, 198 female and 281 male. Palatine torus was observed in 8.65% of cases, being more common in females, while mandibular torus appeared in 6.89% of cases, being more common in males. In view of the above, it is necessary to carry out more studies on our population, due to the large territorial area of Brazil and the great miscegenation that exists.
