Abstract

Viral bronchiolitis, predominantly caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), significantly impacts infants and young children, representing a leading cause of pediatric hospitalizations. This narrative review explores general aspects, the use of hypertonic saline solution, the impact of phenotyping, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on bronchiolitis. Hypertonic saline inhalation has shown modest benefits in reducing hospitalization duration and improving clinical symptoms, though evidence varies. Phenotyping has emerged as a critical tool for personalized management, recognizing the disease's heterogeneity and enabling more effective treatments. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered the epidemiology of bronchiolitis, with an initial reduction in cases followed by a resurgence as preventive measures eased. Continuous surveillance and adaptive management strategies are essential to enhance clinical outcomes and reduce the burden of viral bronchiolitis in pediatric care.
