Abstract
This narrative review delves into the evolving landscape of appendectomy, examining its historical evolution, contemporary indications, surgical techniques, and outcomes. The emergence of robotic appendectomy offers enhanced precision and potentially fewer complications, though its high cost and need for specialized training limit widespread adoption. Comparative analysis between laparoscopic and conventional approaches reinforces laparoscopic appendectomy as the gold standard due to superior postoperative outcomes. The use of antibiotics for uncomplicated appendicitis presents a viable, cost-effective alternative, with ongoing concerns about long-term efficacy and recurrence rates. Access to appendectomy, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, is influenced by socioeconomic, cultural, and geographical factors. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive strategies to improve health education, financial accessibility, and transportation infrastructure, ensuring timely and effective treatment for all patients.
