Introduction: Pulmonary overcirculation refers to the abnormal increase in blood flow through the lungs, frequently observed in various types of congenital heart defects. This increase in pulmonary blood flow can occur due to abnormal communications between the cardiac chambers or between large vessels, as is the case with atrial and ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, and other abnormal connections.
Methodology: The definition of descriptors is an essential step for conducting an efficient and comprehensive search in the scientific literature. The descriptors chosen for this review were based on MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms and include: "congenital heart disease," "pulmonary overcirculation," "pulmonary blood flow," "hemodynamics," "diagnosis," and "treatment." The combination of these descriptors, using Boolean operators, was utilized to maximize the retrieval of relevant articles.
Results and Discussion: In conclusion, the integrative review on pulmonary overcirculation in congenital heart defects highlights the complexity and importance of this condition in the clinical context. Congenital heart defects, due to their varied anatomical presentations, frequently result in an abnormal increase in blood flow to the lungs, with significant repercussions for the patient's health.
