Abstract

An integrative literature review is presented on bipolar affective disorder, its clinical and epidemiological aspects, as well as the impact of this condition on the individual's life. This condition is characterized as a mood disorder that causes sudden, recurrent, chronic and severe behavioral changes. Mood swings range from deep depression to extreme euphoria. It is a disorder that presents manic or hypomanic episodes separated by periods of normality, as well as delusions and hallucinations in a seasonal pattern, which can lead to temporary impairment of cognitive, behavioral and affective functions. Diagnostic criteria are used to define the condition, which can coexist with other comorbidities. There is a need for a multidisciplinary team to intervene to improve patients' quality of life, as well as treatment aimed at the various aspects of this disorder.
