Abstract

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease that causes red blood cells to deform, resulting in severe complications such as painful crises and tissue damage. This end-of-course study carried out a literature review with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of different treatments for sickle cell anemia. Studies published between 2014 and 2024 in the PubMed, Web of Science, AC&T and other databases were analyzed. The treatments evaluated include hydroxyurea, voxelotor, crizanlizumab, blood transfusions, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and emerging gene editing therapies. It is hoped that this study will provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of treatment options for sickle cell anemia, highlighting the effectiveness of each treatment in terms of mitigating symptoms and reducing complications associated with the disease.
