PORTADORES DO VIRUS HIV EM INDIVÍDUOS DA TERCEIRA IDADE

An aging world population is a major challenge for humanity. Individuals aged 60 years and over must represent more than 20% of the world's population by 2050. This scenario led to the formulation of policies aimed at the elderly's health care and the promotion of social opportunities for this population, with consequent improvements in the quality of life and sexual longevity. As the specificities of this growing population have been ignored by both the elderly and their health care providers, the incidence of AIDS among individuals 60 years of age or older has increased simultaneously. In the last decade, 47,437 new cases of AIDS have been reported among individuals aged 50 or older, which corresponds to 9% of new diagnoses of AIDS. From 2001 to 2011, the number of confirmed cases increased by 98% in men and 567% in women. The incidence of AIDS is steadily increasing in many countries, including all regions of Brazil. Thus, the objective of this research is to present a study on the HIV index in elderly individuals.
