Abstract

This article reviews gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children and infants, focusing on diagnosis, treatment, and its impact on child development. GERD is a common condition, especially in infants, characterized by the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, which can result in significant symptoms and complications. The influence of cow's milk protein allergy and eosinophilic esophagitis on the presentation and management of GERD is discussed, emphasizing the importance of differential diagnosis. Complementary exams, such as esophageal pH monitoring and endoscopy, are essential to confirm the diagnosis and evaluate complications. The use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in GERD treatment is addressed, highlighting the need for a careful assessment of their risks and benefits, especially in infants. In conclusion, the management of GERD in children and infants requires an individualized approach, considering symptoms, complementary exams, and potential complications.
