Abstract

This article aims to scan the current medical literature on inguinal hernias. This is an integrative review using the VHL, SciELO, LILACS and PubMed as databases over the last 5 years. 252 articles on the topic were evaluated with an emphasis on a synthesis of the most recent knowledge and greater scientific consistency.  An inguinal hernia is a condition that occurs when fatty tissue or part of the intestine protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall, usually in the groin area.  Causes of this condition may include a combination of genetic factors, weakening of the abdominal muscles, increased abdominal pressure, and activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for a favorable outcome. Prevention includes reducing risk factors, such as avoiding excess weight, maintaining a healthy weight and taking due care when carrying out activities that increase pressure in the abdomen.
