Abstract

Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are battery-powered devices that simulate smoking and generate an aerosol to be inhaled made up of nicotine, flavorings and a type of solvent. This type of cigarette has been considered an alternative to avoiding combustible cigarettes, even though they cause health harm. Therefore, this article aims to relate the use of electronic cigarettes with their harmful effects on various organic systems, mainly the pulmonary, cardiovascular and immune systems. The databases used for the search were Scielo, Pubmed and Science Direct. The descriptors used were “Electronic cigarettes”, “Pulmonary effects” and “Pathophysiology”. Through this research, it was possible to conclude that vaping presents a health risk due to exposure to nicotine and can cause dependence, just like combustible cigarettes. Furthermore, more research is needed to measure all the risks of this use, focusing on the devices' constituents and frequency of use. The use of this resource to stop smoking must be weighed in each case in relation to the risks.
