Abstract
Dental rehabilitation using osseointegrated implants has become common in dental
practice. Being so, it is a challenge for a dental surgeon to also know how to deal
with problems, as peri-implant infections, that interfere with long-term maintenance of
those implants. Depending on the level of involvement by these infections, certain
treatment is necessary. This work is a review of the literature that aims to highlight
the importance of correct follow-up of the patients rehabilitated with implants, to
improve the sensitivity of the diagnostic of peri-implant infections, so that it is
possible to determine the correct treatment planning, since there are no fixed
protocols yet to be followed. Considerations on the types of existing treatments for
mucositis and peri-implantitis are enumerated, thus allowing a reflection on planning.
The treatments range from simple clinical procedures of hygiene instruction to
surgical treatments. Each case and peri-implant situation requires a follow-up course
to eliminate infection and inflammation.
