Abstract
In Anatomy, anatomical variation is a deviation from the normal morphology of an organ or structure of an individual, and among the various anatomical variations, we observe some in the mandible, such as in the mandibular angle. Therefore, in the present study we intend to describe the presentation of the mandibular base in an Osteological Collection from the Northeast Region of Brazil. For our study, 474 dry adult mandibles were used, 174 females and 300 males. All jaws belong to the collection of the Center for Forensic Anthropology at the Faculty of Medicine of FAP-Araripina, located in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. To collect data, the direct observation method was used. After data collection, we observed three types of base called: Type 1, straight, Type 2, with support at the gonial angle and at a midpoint of the base, making it oscillating, and Type 3, with support at the gonial angle and at the gnathion point. . Regarding the total sample (n=474), Type 1 appeared in 117 jaws (24.68%), Type 2 in 154 (32.48%) and Type 3 in 203 (42.82%). In relation to males, 70 jaws (23.33%) presented Type 1, 89 (29.66%) Type 2 and 141 (47%) Type 3. In females, we observed 47 jaws (27.01 %) of Type 1, 65 (37.35%) of Type 2 and 62 (35.63%) of Type 3. Due to the great importance of this structure for the area of Forensic Anthropology, further studies are necessary in our population to identify these variations.
