Abstract

Abdominal wall hernias are a common and potentially debilitating condition, characterized by the protrusion of abdominal tissue through a weakness in the muscular wall. This condition affects millions of people worldwide and can result in pain, discomfort, and serious complications if not adequately treated. Given the prevalence and clinical impact of abdominal wall hernias, choosing the appropriate surgical approach is crucial to ensure satisfactory outcomes and prevent recurrences. Objective: The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive and updated analysis of surgical approaches for abdominal wall hernias, focusing on the comparison of techniques and outcomes. We aim to gather evidence that can guide clinical practice and assist surgeons in making informed decisions in the management of this common condition. Methodology: Health science descriptors used included "abdominal wall hernia," "hernia surgery," "surgical techniques," "surgical outcomes," and related terms. The systematic search was conducted in electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, using the defined search strategies. Randomized clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published up to the date of the search were included. Results: The synthesis of the main surgical approaches for abdominal wall hernias was based on the selected studies. Different techniques, including open, laparoscopic, and robotic hernioplasty, were identified and compared in terms of efficacy, safety, and postoperative outcomes. The analysis of results highlighted the advantages and limitations of each approach, allowing for a critical evaluation of the available options. Conclusion: This review provided a comprehensive overview of surgical approaches for abdominal wall hernias, emphasizing the importance of selecting the appropriate technique for each patient. By considering factors such as efficacy, safety, recovery time, and patient satisfaction, surgeons can make informed decisions that result in better clinical outcomes. We hope that this study contributes to a more evidence-based clinical practice and positive outcomes for patients affected by abdominal wall hernias.
