INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an endocrine disease known as a lack of glucose tolerance that begins during pregnancy, causing dysfunction of the hormone insulin, which can occur in different ways among pregnant women and between trimesters of pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: the objective of developing this project is to analyze aspects of the maternal microbiota that can positively interfere in the prevention of gestational diabetes mellitus. METHODOLOGY: a literature review was carried out, 16 articles published in the last 8 years were used and carefully selected through databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, LILACS and Scielo. Of these, 13 articles were used to create a table with results. RESULTS: maternal microbiota is closely linked to the prevention of gestational diabetes mellitus. Thus, it was observed that certain patterns and also supplementation with probiotics in adequate quantities may be related to an improvement in gestational quality, preventing possible complications of GDM for the mother and the fetus. CONCLUSION: it is concluded that, despite the importance of using probiotics for maintaining ideal aspects of the maternal microbiota, other factors must also be present such as a healthy diet, weight gain that does not exceed expected limits and monitoring of the mother and fetus in the puerperal period. Furthermore, the importance of disseminating correct guidelines regarding the disease and its treatment when it has already started was seen so that complications can be avoided.
