Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the scientific works published in the literature on patient safety in urgent and emergency services. To this end, an integrated review of the literature was carried out through a bibliographic search in October 2020 in the databases Nursing Database (BDENF), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), PubMed and Literature in Health Sciences of America Latin and Caribbean (LILACS). The final sample resulted in 43 articles divided into four thematic axes according to the type of emergency and emergency services in which the research was carried out. The most discussed topics in the study are dangerous problems related to emergency care and transportation, safety culture, dangerous problems related to medication, interventions to improve patient safety, occupational stress, anxiety and burnout, and patient safety and invisibility. The publication demonstrated that research into patient safety in EDs and emergency services is at an early stage, due to the complexity of the services provided. Furthermore, there are few studies carried out in Brazil focused on emergency care units.
