Abstract

Dental adhesive systems are usually divided into two enamel and dentin surface treatment strategies: total etch and self-etching. The use of these products involves several clinical steps that, in addition to requiring longer application time, increase the possibility of error by the dentist. The universal adhesive system was recently developed which, in addition to allowing faster treatment, has a greater range of applications than previous systems. This system was introduced on the market recently and, for this reason, many dentists still have doubts about its use. Therefore, the objective of this study was to report a clinical case demonstrating the application of the universal adhesive system from different perspectives. A 54-year-old Caucasian male patient who had unsatisfactory amalgam and composite restorations was selected. After removal of the restorations, the cavities were treated with a universal adhesive system using the total etching technique or the selective enamel etching technique. The cavities were filled with composite resin. Although the universal adhesive system is recent in dentistry and little used by dentists, it has presented great advantages when compared to other adhesive systems. As it contains only one bottle, this system is applied more easily and quickly, offering greater comfort to the patient. From this clinical case report, it can be concluded that the universal adhesive system has a wide range of indications, in addition to being easier to apply.
