Abstract
Introduction: The emergence of the new strain of SARS-CoV (coronavirus) marked the onset of the pandemic of this disease, initially considered a condition that primarily affected the human respiratory system. However, recent studies indicate that the virus's impact is multisystemic, affecting various human organs, including the testicles. this raises the discussion about the virus's impact on male fertility. Objective: To establish the relationship between coronavirus infection and male infertility. Methodology: A qualitative literature review was conducted following these steps: defining the theme and research question, literature search, selecting materials compatible with the objective through critical analysis, reading and extracting key information, interpreting the results, and constructing the written review. For literature selection, articles on "The Relationship between COVID-19 and male infertility" and "The Relationship between SARS-CoV-2 and male infertility" were searched on databases, along with keywords such as "COVID-19," "Infertility," and "Male genital system." The most recent and relevant articles that aligned with the paper's objective were chosen. Results and Discussion: Among the identified articles, 11 were selected, revealing the presence of the ACE2 enzyme in the testicles, causing alterations in the realm of male reproduction. These alterations manifested as reductions in hormone concentrations, compromised semen quality, dysfunction of specific cells and their functions, evidenced by reduced sperm concentration, mobility, and retention, as well as inflammation (orchitis) and erectile dysfunction. Conclusion: All these findings underscore the need for further investigations into the topic and the development of treatments aimed at reversing the virus's impact on male fertility.
