Abstract

Endometriosis is a complex and often debilitating gynaecological condition that affects millions of women around the world. Characterized by the presence of tissue similar to the endometrium, which normally lines the inside of the uterus, outside the uterus, endometriosis can cause a series of uncomfortable symptoms and significantly impact women's quality of life. Assessing the incidence of endometriosis is essential to understand the prevalence of the disease in the female population and identify risk groups. This can help guide public health policies, direct resources toward research, and develop more effective prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment strategies. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate hospital admissions caused by endometriosis in the northern region of Brazil. This is an ecological time series study, which used data from the DATASUS Hospital Information System (SIH). This comprehensive source offers a detailed overview of hospitalizations in the northern region of Brazil. We describe a 41% increase in hospitalizations for endometriosis in the northern region of Brazil, with the state of Pará being responsible for the majority of hospitalizations. Furthermore, it was possible to identify that brown women aged between 40 and 49 years were the most affected. Regarding the nature of care, the majority of hospitalizations (62%) were elective. Ultimately, knowledge of endometriosis risk factors can guide future research and development of public health policies aimed at preventing the disease, improving diagnosis and treatment, and promoting equity in access to health care.
