Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, which directly impacts physiological and biochemical changes in the individual, negatively affecting inflammatory processes caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque, leading to gum infections. In turn, periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, being one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults, in addition to being associated with several systemic conditions, such as DM. Objective: Understand the interrelationship between periodontitis and diabetes. Methodology: The present study is a bibliographic research of the integrative literature review type, with a descriptive character and a qualitative approach. As a database for consultation, MEDLINE and LILACS were used via VHL and PubMed, through advanced search tools and using the following descriptors: ("Diabetes Mellitus"), ("Periodontitis") and ("Complications of Diabetes "), in an associated way and using the filleted operator AND. Results: The literature studied certainly suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes, considering periodontal treatment as an adjuvant in glycemic control. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a bidirectional relationship between the two conditions, where diabetes can increase the risk of developing periodontitis, and, in turn, periodontitis can worsen glycemic control in diabetic patients.
