Abstract

To analyze the characteristics of Endometriosis. Literature review: Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition that depends on estrogen levels and is benign, affecting approximately 5 to 10% of women of reproductive age. At the current time, there are around 190 million women around the world who suffer from endometriosis. Although a common, non-cancerous condition, the growth of endometrial-like tissue in locations outside the uterus and the resulting inflammation can lead to symptoms such as menstrual cramps, pelvic pain unrelated to the menstrual cycle, pain during sexual intercourse, heavy menstrual flow , difficulty urinating, difficulty evacuating, chronic pain and infertility. Final considerations: Endometriosis is a global health problem, affecting women of childbearing age with chronic pain in the pelvic region. This difficult-to-diagnose condition results in costs to the healthcare system, lost work and psychological problems, mainly related to pain and infertility. Treatment can be either clinical or surgical, with the aim of relieving symptoms and taking into account the desire to become pregnant or not. For those who do not wish to become pregnant, the first treatment option is combined oral contraceptives. However, for those who wish to become pregnant, surgery appears to be a viable option.
