Abstract

Introduction: Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) is a non-neoplastic proliferative lesion and when it affects the oral region it is commonly found in gums, but some rarer PG cases it can affect the upper lips that’s why only few cases have been reported in the literature.

Aim: The present study aims to report an unusual case of Pyogenic Granuloma on the upper lip in a male patient.

Case Report: Melanoderma patient, male, 20 years old, with no previous systemic complications and history of allergy, attended a dental school in northern Brazil with the main complaint of a nodule in the right upper lip that had appeared approximately 8 months ago. Clinically, a nodular lesion with a sessile base located on the right upper lip and with an approximate size of 8x5x4 centimeters was observed, with an erythematous pink color, irregular shape, ulcerated surface due to recurrent traumas, in addition, there was no painful symptoms, bleeding or suppuration. . After clinical procedures, excisional biopsy was performed and the collected material was placed in a vial containing 10% buffered formaldehyde, histopathological examination revealed a fragment of mucosa covered by stratified parakeratinized squamous epithelium. Postoperative control was performed, and the patient did not show any symptoms or clinical signs of recurrence of the lesion.

Conclusion: We conclude that Pyogenic Granuloma is a common lesion that occurs in the oral cavity. However, this article is relevant to the scientific literature because it presents a report of a case of the GP in its rarest area of incidence and in a male patient. And through the description of this rare case, we hope that dental surgeons will be attentive to the clinical data of lip lesions and have histopathological exams as a tool in their diagnosis.
