Abstract

The condyle is considered one of the most vulnerable regions of the mandible and is most affected by fractures. The main symptoms of this fracture are local pain, discomfort when chewing and swallowing, edema, facial asymmetry, compromised occlusion and TMJ, bone crackling and trismus. It has a higher incidence in young males and is mostly caused by traffic accidents, and may present trauma only in the condylar region or in combined regions. Treatment must be individual, requiring the study of each isolated case to see whether only more conservative or surgical care is necessary.
