Abstract

Introduction: Autoimmune hepatitis, a complex and challenging condition of the hepatic system, has garnered increasing interest in the scientific community due to its multifaceted nature and significant implications for human health. This inflammatory liver disease, characterized by an autoimmune response directed against hepatocytes, presents a unique complexity in both its etiology and clinical manifestations.

Methodology: The methodology employed for this literature review on autoimmune hepatitis involved a comprehensive search for scientific articles, beginning on 01/08/2023 and concluding on 12/01/2023. The search was conducted using English descriptors specific to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), focusing on Hepatitis, Autoimmune, Autoimmune Hepatitis, Immunologic System, Prevalence, and Epidemiology.

Results: The higher prevalence of women affected by autoimmune hepatitis stands among the most pronounced in autoimmune conditions. However, the underlying mechanisms behind gender disparities in autoimmune liver diseases still remain exclusively unknown.

Conclusion: It is crucial that patients with autoimmune hepatitis receive regular health team follow-up to monitor the progression of the disease and adjust the treatment as necessary.
