Abstract

This article aims to analyze the relationship between the use of digital media and the onset of ADHD symptoms, using the PubMed database with the terms “Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder”, “Social media”, “Internet addiction”, “Cognitive decline”. This integrative review highlighted the complex relationship between the use of digital media and the onset of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms. The results suggest that excessive use of digital platforms is not only associated with an increased incidence of ADHD, but can also negatively impact cognitive development, especially in children and adolescents. Risk variables, such as genetic predisposition, sex and age, are fundamental to understanding this dynamic, highlighting the need for targeted interventions that consider these aspects. Given the evidence presented, it is essential that parents, educators and mental health professionals adopt strategies that promote a balanced and healthy use of digital media. Raising awareness of the risks associated with excessive consumption of digital content and encouraging practices that stimulate attention and focus are crucial steps to protect young people’s mental health. Future research should continue to explore this relationship, seeking to develop guidelines that can guide the responsible use of technology in everyday life.
