Abstract

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition that predominantly affects children and adolescents, characterized by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, resulting in severe insulin deficiency. This study investigates not only the clinical and pathophysiological aspects of T1DM but also its profound psychosocial impacts. Treatment of T1DM involves intensive insulin therapy from diagnosis, aiming to maintain glycemic control and prevent serious complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis. Health education plays a crucial role in effective management, empowering patients and families to safely navigate daily challenges with autonomy. Strategies such as nutritional education, encouragement of physical activity, and psychological support are essential to improve quality of life and reduce disease impact. Additionally, unique challenges faced by children and adolescents with T1DM are observed, including emotional, social, and educational impacts of the disease. The quality of life for these young individuals can be compromised, requiring ongoing support from family, healthcare professionals, and the community. Recent advancements, such as continuous insulin infusion systems and continuous glucose monitoring, offer new perspectives for more precise and less invasive control, promoting better treatment adherence and a life closer to normal for T1DM patients. In summary, this study reinforces the need for multidisciplinary approaches to address the challenges of T1DM, focusing not only on metabolic control but also on improving the quality of life for patients affected by this complex and demanding condition.
