Abstract

The general objective of this review is to verify the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU). To carry out the study, a search was carried out in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Scielo databases, using the keywords: transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Subsequently, scientific articles were selected with a time frame from 2013 to 2023, regardless of the language of publication. Five studies were selected that were directly related to the topic and that met the inclusion criteria. It was found that electrical stimulation divides opinions in the scientific community, some authors showed, through detailed analysis, among other findings, that the practice improves pain and contributes to the reestablishment of gait. However, there are still few randomized clinical studies that indicate intensive application.
