Abstract

Introduction: Cardiac arrhythmias are highly prevalent disorders with significant morbidity and mortality in Brazil, representing a leading cause of death from non-communicable chronic diseases. The training of general practitioners and medical students often shows gaps in the initial recognition and management of these conditions, especially in regions with limited access to specialized services. This curricular deficiency compromises adequate diagnosis and intervention, highlighting the need for complementary educational strategies that integrate theory and practice. Objectives: This work aimed to present the results of an extracurricular educational activity, the course "Arrhythmias and tachycardias: their importance for the general practitioner," exploring its pedagogical strategies and reflecting on the effectiveness of arrhythmia teaching in medical training. Methodology: This is a descriptive, qualitative, experience report study, documenting the training of medical students in managing cardiac arrhythmias. The course, held virtually, had 49 participants and was led by an arrhythmologist, using a clinical case-based methodology. The organization included content selection, committee training, and social media dissemination, seeking to stimulate clinical reasoning and student protagonism. Results and Discussion: The activity proved effective in improving knowledge and clinical competencies, reinforcing the potential of clinical case-based strategies for developing reasoning and practical application. Student protagonism was highlighted in overcoming curricular gaps and in training for early identification and intervention in arrhythmias. Although the remote format broadened access, it imposed limitations on practical interaction, such as in electrocardiogram (ECG) training. Conclusion: The experience suggests the importance of integrating actions like this into more comprehensive and continuous educational strategies for solid medical training aligned with regional health needs, contributing to reducing morbidity and mortality associated with arrhythmias.
