Abstract
Introduction: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Brazil and a major global public health problem. It arises from the uncontrolled growth of skin cells, with melanoma being the most dangerous due to its ability to spread. In addition, factors such as sun exposure, family history, immunosuppression, exposure to carcinogenic substances, and genetic predisposition can contribute to the development of malignant skin cancer. Objective: This article aims to provide an epidemiological analysis of the prevalence and impacts of skin cancer in Brazil and its macroregions, from January 2014 to June 2024. Methodology: This is a retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative and temporal approach, with data regarding the prevalence and impacts of hospitalizations from 2014 to 2024, in the five Brazilian regions. Results: The results revealed significant regional inequalities in hospitalizations for malignant skin neoplasms in Brazil. The Southeast region accounted for 40.2% of hospitalizations (31,565 cases), followed by the South (33.8%) and Northeast (18.78%) regions. In terms of hospital stay, the North region had the highest average (5.3 days). The most affected profile included men (51.9% of cases), white-skinned people (61.9%), and elderly individuals, with an average age of 71 years in confirmed cases. Mortality was predominant in the Southeast (45% of deaths) and South (31.5%). Conclusion: The results obtained demonstrate the epidemiological relevance of malignant skin neoplasms in Brazil, evidencing significant regional inequalities both in terms of prevalence and access to health services.
