Abstract
Introduction: This study aims to explore the connection between periodontitis and the risk of developing cancer, highlighting the importance of dental care in the treatment and prevention of oncological diseases. Objectives: The objective is to explore the scientific evidence on the mechanisms by which periodontal diseases can influence the progression of malignant tumors and analyze how oral health can impact oncological treatment. Methodology: The review was conducted through an integrative analysis of the literature, using the PubMed, BVS and SciELO databases. Ten studies published between 2018 and 2024 that investigate the relationship between periodontitis and cancer were selected. Results and discussion: The reviewed studies suggest a relationship between periodontal inflammation and the development of malignant neoplasms, mainly through alteration of the oral microbiome and negative modulation of the immune response. The presence of pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum was associated with a pro-tumorigenic environment. Conclusion: The review highlights the need for a multidisciplinary approach, integrating dental care from diagnosis to oncological treatment, as a way to minimize complications and optimize therapeutic results.
