Abstract

The present article aimed to analyze the interconnection between sleep disturbances and the development of mental disorders. To achieve this, it is necessary to investigate specific factors: to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbances in populations with psychiatric disorders, to highlight the consequences of sleep deprivation on mood and cognition, and to examine the role of sleep in emotional regulation. This study is justified by the increasing prevalence of sleep disturbances and mental disorders in the global population, which have become a significant concern for public health. This is an integrative literature review. The research was conducted in academic databases such as PubMed, Scielo, and Medline. The search was restricted to articles published in Portuguese; b) Selection of Keywords: Relevant keywords such as "Sleep Disturbances," "Psychiatric Disorders," "Mental Health," and "prevention" were used for the period from 2019 to 2024. The data indicate that the presence of sleep disturbances, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, not only exacerbates symptoms of psychiatric disorders but may also act as a significant risk factor for their onset. Furthermore, the interrelationship between sleep and mental health is bidirectional. While sleep disturbances can contribute to the development of psychiatric conditions, mental disorders can also affect sleep quality, creating a vicious cycle that hampers recovery and effective treatment.
