O USO DA TOXINA BOTULÍNICA PARA O TRATAMENTO DE PARALISIAS FACIAIS: UMA REVISÃO INTEGRATIVA

Abstract

Facial paralysis is a condition that affects the facial muscles, resulting in loss of control over facial movements and an asymmetrical appearance. In view of this, the use of botulinum toxin in the treatment of facial paralysis has proven to be an effective and safe option. The objective of the study was to discuss the efficacy and benefits of using botulinum toxin in the treatment of facial paralysis, as well as to understand the mechanisms of action of this substance in this specific application. This is an integrative review of the literature, where the following databases were used: PUBMED, SCIELO and LILACS, having as a basis for selection, some inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 33 (thirty-three) articles were found in the databases. After reading the titles and abstracts, 24 (twenty-four) articles remained, 8 (eight) in PUBMED, 7 (five) in SCIELO and 9 (nine) in LILACS. After reading the 24 (twenty-four) articles in full and applying the eligibility criteria, 16 (sixteen) articles were discarded because they did not meet the study proposal. Thus, 8 (eight) studies were included in the final sample as a result of this review. It was possible to observe the different points of view cited by each author throughout the work; it is essential to seek guidance from a qualified professional to evaluate the case and indicate the best treatment. After the literary reviews, it is concluded that botulinum toxin has proven to be an effective therapeutic option in the treatment of facial paralysis.
