Abstract

This article aims to describe the epidemiological characteristics of scorpion accidents that occurred in the State of São Paulo between 2013 and 2022. A descriptive, quantitative and retrospective study was carried out on accidents reported in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), available on the website from DATASUS. 255,054 accidents were reported, of which 100 resulted in death. The average incidence and mortality rates were 222.71 and 0.08/100,000 inhabitants, respectively. The average fatality rate was 0.04%. Regions XII and XIII had the highest incidence and mortality rates. The highest fatality rates occurred in Regions XII and XIII. Accidents occurred more frequently among males (54.96%), whites (63.72%) and between 20 and 39 years old (30.61%). The majority of cases were treated within 0 to 1 hour (75.74%), classified as mild (92.47%) and progressed to cure (94.29%). It is concluded that the incidence is high mainly in Regions XII and XIII. The profile of accidents occurring in São Paulo corresponds to that found in the rest of the country. The results obtained demonstrate the need to intensify scorpion control actions, aiming to prevent accidents.
