Abstract

This integrative review examines the association between folic acid supplementation during pregnancy and the risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children. The search included articles published in the last decade, resulting in the selection of eight relevant epidemiological and clinical studies. The findings indicate a consistent trend that folic acid supplementation, both before and during pregnancy, is associated with a lower risk of ASD in offspring. However, some variations were observed regarding the timing and duration of supplementation, as well as in different populations studied. This review highlights the importance of folic acid supplementation as a potential preventive measure for ASD and underscores the need for further research to fully elucidate this relationship and its clinical implications.
