Abstract

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of family function on oral health status in adults and elderly individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Clinical data regarding oral health status were correlated with the scores of the FACES III (Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales). Individuals with DM2 who perceived their families with cohesion and balanced adaptability had a lower average of tooth loss, more filled teeth and less use of dentures. Among individuals who used prostheses, 54.3% belonged to extreme cohesion groups, while, among those who did not, 63.6% belonged to balanced groups (p=0.002). From these data, it was possible to perceive that a balanced family function can exert a positive influence on the oral health condition of adults and elderly people with DM2, who have less tooth loss.
