Abstract

Entering academic life is recognized as a phase of change, where often, in an attempt to reconcile academic, professional and personal life, there is a need to spend more time awake. Therefore, psychostimulants such as caffeine tend to be the most used, especially due to their theoretical safety. However, when taken in high doses, caffeine can have adverse effects, including a decrease in sleep quality. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the prevalence of caffeine consumption by students in the health area and associate it with the repercussions on students' sleep. Exploratory bibliographic research was carried out, of the integrative literature review type, in the SciELO, MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF and IBECS databases; using the descriptors “Students, Health Occupations”, “Sleep” and “Caffeine”, combined by the Boolean operator AND and OR. To this end, works published in the last 5 years (2018-2023), in Portuguese, English and Spanish and all related to the theme. It was decided to exclude works with a narrative approach, case reports, experience reports, book chapters, editorials and possible duplicates. After carrying out the three filtering stages – reading by titles, abstracts and full text – a sample of 16 articles was obtained. In the available literature, a prevalence of consumption of natural psychostimulants was observed, especially caffeine, studies justified this by the greater ease and lower cost of acquisition. The predominance of caffeine consumption via energy drinks was identified among students, although there were cultural variations between countries, and the consumption of the compound was associated with symptoms of tachycardia, nervousness, insomnia, etc. Regarding sleep, there was a drop in total sleep time, a drop in the duration of the REM phase and an increase in sleep latency. Therefore, even though caffeine consumption is effective when it is necessary to remain awake, its loss of sleep can lead to a drop in cognitive/academic performance, and it must therefore be considered whether there is really a need for continued consumption.
