Abstract

This work aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychiatric hospitalizations in the State of Paraná across three distinct phases: pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic. The study analytically addresses various psychiatric conditions, highlighting the pandemic's influence on their hospitalization rates. The pandemic provided a conducive environment for the emergence and exacerbation of psychiatric disorders, negatively affecting the population's mental health due to social isolation, economic uncertainties, fear of infection, loss of loved ones, and strain on the healthcare system. Utilizing DATASUS data, the research sought to identify psychiatric illnesses most affected by the pandemic and social distancing measures. It was observed that there was a decrease in hospitalizations in the post-pandemic years, particularly among male patients. Although hospitalizations decreased among female patients as well, the reduction was not as substantial as that among male patients, showing a significantly less pronounced decline. Consequently, this study aims to provide insights for the development of preventive strategies and control measures for these diseases in future years, along with a gradual, long-term monitoring of the pandemic's consequences.
