Abstract
Introduction: Myofascial pain is characterized by the presence of trigger points (TPs) in a tense muscle band, resulting in local or radiating pain. Among the treatment techniques for myofascial pain, Dry Needling (DN) stands out. This technique, involving the use of needles in a dry procedure, focuses on the direct application of needles to TPs, triggering a release response and, as a result, symptom reduction. Objective: To analyze the benefits and evidence of DN in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome in physical therapy.Methodology: This is na literature review. Results: Regarding the results obtained in the analyzed studies of isolated intervention, comparison, and those involving medication, it was observed that the effectiveness of dry needling in myofascial pain syndrome remains significant. In some studies, it shows superior perfomance, while in others, it demonstrates effects similar to those of comparison, with no evidence of unsatisfactory or inferior results in terms of its effectiveness. Therefore, it is possible to support the hypothesis that the application of the investigated technique can become an effective adjuvant therapy in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome, resulting in an improvement in pain.
