Abstract

This study aims to analyze the oral manifestations affected by COVID-19 through case reports and published studies, in which a possible relationship between COVID-19 and mucocutaneous lesions in the oral cavity and face is presented. The methodology involved a review of the PubMed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Medline Complete databases. A total of 26 articles reporting mucocutaneous manifestations in the oral cavity and face associated with COVID-19 were selected. Ninety-one cases with mucocutaneous manifestations in the oral cavity and face associated with COVID-19 were identified. In 18% of the patients, there were facial and oral lesions. Cheeks were the most affected areas (16%), and among oral lesions, the most affected site was the tongue (26%). It is concluded that, according to the findings, the presence of mucocutaneous manifestations in the face and oral cavity is associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is expected that tissues with higher expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and, consequently, present some type of lesion. Among oral tissues with higher expression of these molecules, the tongue was described, favoring a higher prevalence of lesions.
