Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objective: This article aims to analyze the ethical and discriminatory challenges faced by nursing professionals in the context of home care, with particular emphasis on the refusal of professionals by patients or family members based on gender, race, sexual orientation, and body prejudices.

Methods: A narrative review of existing scientific literature was conducted, covering research in the areas of home nursing, bioethics, human rights, and discrimination in the healthcare environment. The focus was on studies exploring the manifestation of prejudices in the home care context, their consequences for the organizational climate, the quality of care, and the well-being of professionals. Publications from the last five years until August 2025 were prioritized, complemented by classic and fundamental works.

Results: The literature indicates that the refusal of nursing professionals in home care, motivated by gender, race, sexual orientation, and body prejudices, can cause significant dysfunctions in the care environment. Such discriminatory practices are associated with professional devaluation, increased work-related stress, compromised quality of care, and negative impacts on professionals' well-being. Manifestations include gender stereotypes, structural racism, homophobia, and prejudices related to physical appearance, which undermine collaboration and trust between professionals and patients.

Conclusion: The recognition and understanding of ethical and discriminatory challenges in the home care environment are crucial for human resource management and the sustainability of home healthcare services. Awareness, the implementation of inclusion policies, and the development of intervention strategies can mitigate the adverse effects of discrimination, promoting healthier and more productive work environments, in addition to ensuring humanized and quality care for patients.
