Abstract

Objectives: To critically review the scientific literature on the influence of the presence of a ferrule on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with intraradicular posts. Methodology: This literature review was conducted between June and July 2025. The guiding question was "Does the presence of a ferrule influence the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with intraradicular posts?" Based on this, a search was conducted in the PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine) and Science Direct databases, with a time span of 5 years. The search strategy was formulated by combining the DeCS/MeSH descriptors "dental retention posts," "fracture resistance," and "ferule" combined with the Boolean operator "AND." The selection criteria were: studies published in the last 5 years, related to the guiding question, with full text available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized clinical trials. The initial search resulted in the identification of 22 articles. Of these, 7 articles were included in the research. Conclusion: The presence of a ferrule is essential to optimize the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth, regardless of the type of post used. Its absence compromises the biomechanical performance of the restoration. Therefore, preserving the cervical structure should be a priority in restorative planning.
