Abstract

Young patients with diabetes may experience oral complications throughout their lives. Several factors, such as late diagnosis and poor management, can contribute to the emergence of these problems. There are reports in the literature about the importance of encouraging these patients to take care of oral hygiene. However, these patients have difficulty reconciling diabetes care and their oral health. The objective of this work was to investigate the characteristics of oral health in young people with Diabetes Mellitus in the literature, verifying their access and adherence to oral health care. This is an integrative literature review with a search for data in the Pubmed and BVS databases, using the descriptors “diabetes”, “young people” and “oral health” and the corresponding words in English. 139 articles were located, and after applying selection criteria, 125 articles were excluded and 14 were selected for the final construction of the work. It was found that in the literature there is a large amount of work involving the topic and in addition there was consensus among the selected works that poor diabetes control can cause a series of oral problems for the individual and that young people have little acceptability, or little information to integrate oral health care into your routine.
